Catching up, Winning Awards

In the mix of moving across the country, I’ve fallen behind on some stuff…one of those items is that at the Illinois Press Photographers Association (IPPA) Best of Photography competition I took awards for 1st place in Portrait, HM in Portrait, and 2nd place in Enterprise Picture Story.  Also at the Southern Short Course I took 2nd place in Daily Life and 3rd place in Daily Life Story.  All and all not to bad.  Not great, I’d like to have done better, but on the other hand that’s always true.

The winning entries are related to my story on Michele.  Michele is a breast cancer fighter/survivor.  I documented you her battle throughout 2008 and into 2009.  I hope to continue to document her in the future, even with the flights involved.  By the way, if you ever get a chance to meet her, she’s a great human being.

The image below is after her 2nd chemo round, during which she stopped breathing from anaphalatic shock, this is during the elevator right down to the car.  This is the image that took first in Portrait.

Goodbye Weekend Plans

So I had plans for this weekend, mostly work plans, but plans. Basically Saturday morning survived and Saturday night, which was indoors, the rest of the weekend was thrown away. Such is the life of flooding and constant rain.

Instead I spent all day Sunday, half of which was supposed to be shooting a magazine cover on the Chicago River (ahh…the irony), standing in the Des Plaines River watching people sandbag and surveying damage. I don’t if I’ve ever treasured dry socks as much as when I got home. 6 hours of wading through a river is really plenty. But I do have to say in the world of problems, at least I have a dry home to go home to, and for that, I am thankful tonight.

Dancing in the Park

jh_200808181734_mg_9192
The city had going on today, and again on Wednesday, some dancing in Millennium Park. I didn’t get to stick around as long as I would’ve liked, but hey, whatever. Got an okay image or two, and I always love good break dancing.

If you want to see it it will be happening again on Wednesday from 4-6pm, starts at Crown Fountain (the spitting fountains on Michigan Ave.) and works around the park from there.

Things to Remember

I got to set-up the strobes more often. It just helps out so much sometimes. (I’m not saying it’s a good photo, it is a business portrait after all, just that it would be so much worse without the additional lighting.)

Because I Can, V

Still feeling this one out. Not sure if it says much of anything or not. Hmmm…

Just Not Right

I would love to provide a full context for this photo, but I feel that the need to protect the people involved is more important, and there is no way I would type such a story onto the internet. (you know it’s good when I won’t discuss it.)

The vague story is that the woman was a judge for the Chiditarod, an urban Iditarod/shopping cart race/bar crawl. She was willing to let this gentleman, who wanted to win, leave early if he bribed this judge with what she wanted. What she wanted was not to be repeated in writing. Suffice it to say, it’s one of those moments in life where a man must decide between what he wants, wants so bad he can taste it, and what is right. It’s watching the moral soul of a man crack.

I love those moments in life.

If you want to know more, you have to ask me in person. It’s a great story, everyone laughs, everyone loves the story, and that makes it even more disturbing.

Church Painting Pano

As usual, click here or on the pano to view it how it’s meant to be seen.

This is from a church restoration project back in 2005, I think, at Ascension Church in Oak Park, IL.
