A “Homemade” Sign

So Erin and I went to a campaign event for Senator Harry Reid’s re-election effort.  We figured it would be fun, free food, and we’re big fans of being able to buy health insurance.

I’ve been to a lot of campaign events in my days, but none that I can remember as just a person, a citizen, usually it was as a journalist.  It was a fun change of pace for me.

One of the humourous little things I saw though was the campaign volunteers handing out signs to the attendees.  The campaign didn’t allow people to bring in signs but would hand them out to attendees.  That’s one way to keep everyone on message I guess.

To be fair, this is nowhere near as bad as some of the other stories I’ve read about other campaigns, but it was funny to see.

Nevada State Trail Marker

There are a lot of trails for hiking in Nevada.  Many of them, I’m guessing, not “official”.  “Official” meaning designated by the BLM or the Park Service or whichever agency owns that land.  (86% of the land in Nevada is owned by the Federal Government.)

This leaves a lot of open land, that no one really deals with, and people like me and the lady like to hike.  In such places, there are homemade trail markers.

Usually a tower of rocks. It’s highly unnatural looking, catches the eye, and is built from material all readily available.

And is very handy for not getting lost in areas which are pretty easy to get lost in.  Thank you nice people.

I see a Dragon in the cloud shadow, but maybe I’m on dehydrated and hallucinating.

So originally when I saw this I thought it looked like a small fuzzy Beavertail Cactus.  I thought that was just a funny phrase.

In actuality it’s an Old Man Cactus, I think, and that name is not as funny.  I’m trying to learn all the vegetation out here, at least a little, and it’s going to take a while.

I did find a nice resource in Bird and Hike where they list the various habitats, and the various cacti around Vegas.

Also everything I thought was Beavertail Cactus is a member of the Pricklypear Cactus family.  More to learn.

It wouldn’t be so strange, if it wasn’t a sign buried up to the top of the post, and if it wasn’t many miles from anywhere.  I guess if you’ve got a ridge on each side blocking any view from the road the valley in between is good for anything, including dumping your ruble and dirt.  Sad really.
