When a family loses their home to a fire, they usually flee their homes with only the clothes on their backs. When 14-year old Matthew Hutchison learned that many families in Las Vegas were losing everything, he decided he would do something to help. Matthew started a drive to collect money for the project and assembled 150 clothing packs for the American Red Cross to give to those families who lost their home to a fire.

Helping Kids Clinic
The Helping Kids Clinic has been providing free health care and immunizations to low-income children throughout Las Vegas since 1995. Medical professionals volunteer in the clinic to provide sports physicals, wellness checks, dental checks, developmental screenings and hearing tests. In the past year, volunteers have administered an extraordinary 11,848 vaccines to under-served children in Las Vegas, ensuring that they are protected against preventable disease.

James Brathor was on his way home from work when he observed a head-on collision on Hwy 95. Both cars had caught on fire upon impact. James pulled over and immediately sprang into action, jumping over the median to find a man trapped inside the burning car, struggling to free himself. Without thought to his personal safety, James successfully pulled the man out of the car just before the vehicle became totally engulfed in flames.

Officers Steiber, Schreiber and Jefferson
Officers Steiber, Schreiber and Jefferson were called to the 5th floor balcony where they found an intoxicated man with one leg over the side of the railing. The man was extremely upset about a family argument and attempted to climb over the edge. Officers Steiber, Schreiber and Jefferson were able to prevent a terrible accident by restraining him and safely taking him into custody where he could undergo medical and mental evaluations.

Jonah Schreiner
Jonah Shreiner, age 17, was doing his homework one evening after school when he realized that the house was unusually quiet and his 18-month old sister was nowhere to be found. He noticed the dog door leading to the pool area was open, and he ran outside to find his little sister floating face down in the pool. The training he received just months before to become a lifeguard kicked in. He pulled the toddler from the water and performed CPR for an agonizing 4 minutes before she regained consciousness. Jonah’s sister is alive today because of his lifeguard training and quick actions.

Terry Choyce
Terry Choyce, a firefighter with the Nevada National Test Site, was off-duty and running errands with his wife when he saw a person lying face down in the road. He immediately used his car to block traffic and ran to assist the elderly man, who was not breathing. Terry began CPR and continued for several minutes until he heard the man take his first gasp of air. Terry then waited with him until paramedics arrived. The elderly man made a full recovery and has become close friends with Terry and his family.

Derris Hunt
Derris Hunt is a personal trainer who volunteers with the Nevada Center for the Blind. When he noticed that there weren’t many options available for the blind community to pursue fitness, he wanted to change that. Derris collected donations for the cause and purchased the needed equipment to build a fitness center for the blind. Each week he teaches them to use the equipment and has been able to help blind individuals gain confidence and new skills that have changed their lives.

Joy “Pua” Medeiros
Joy “Pua” Medeiros learned about the need to bring clean water to developing countries through an organization called charity:water. She was so moved by this knowledge that she orchestrated several very successful fundraising events including bake sales, a raffle, and a walk-a-thon. Her tireless work raised a total of $72,000 to donate to the cause. Joy’s efforts have truly made an impact on many throughout the world who will now have access to clean water.

Staff Sergeant O.K. Hubble
Staff Sergeant O.K. Hubble was on a plane when a fellow flight passenger collapsed in the aisle, unconscious. He immediately responded by stabilizing the victim and treating a head injury that resulted from the fall. Due to Sgt. Hubble’s quick actions, the flight did not need to be diverted to treat the medical emergency.
