Yeah, I know the feeling, minus the water fowl. There is something for me just fascinating about textures regardless of scale, and in part because of a lack of scale.

Josh, I love images like this......I can't tell what scale we're looking at......could be the surface of mars or it could be contained in the space of a footprint.....I used to look down at the frozen Iowa River and have the same thought......until some massive water fowl flew under and spoiled the illusion......

Yeah, it's quite the place. I hope you can understand why I want to do Angel's Landing (I'm assuming you saw where it was even if you didn't believe there was a path up there or would want to do it yourself) and The Narrows. I saw you two did the riverwalk, I can only imagine how awesome another 12 miles of that would be.

That was beautiful! It made me cry. My heart ached for you and Erin. I certainly will pray for you and your family. You probably don't remember me I'm your dad's first cousin. I visited your family when you lived in Madison. Who knew you were going to grow up to be such a cool person? But you sure are and Erin must be too if she's with you!

What a beautiful daughter you have. We also lost our only son, Emerson, at 20 weeks. It will be 9 years this Saturday. The pain is still there, not as raw as it was in those first few days and weeks, but it is there. And the fear, I wish I could say it goes away, but it is always in your face. Like you said, any strange pain or unusual feeling caused me more dread during my other pregnancies than I ever could have imagined. I had three more perfectly healthy pregnancies after we lost our son, but they were all treated as high risk, which only added to the fear for me.

I hope you and your wife have a very healthy pregnancy. Sending you thoughts and prayers of support.

What a sweet, beautiful little girl you have. We lost our son at 20 weeks... and you're so right, the pain becomes a part of your reality, a part of the way things are and, in it's way, a comfort. It's another small thing we have left of our babies... a tiny piece of the lives they so briefly held. We have nothing left of them but the pictures and the pain, and so it becomes a positive in some strange way. The loss of a child warps everything, and we are never the same.

Good God, if that is not the most powerful and beautiful thing I have ever read on the web... or anywhere. I relate so much. I've experienced a lot of unexpected loss but no one has ever boiled down exactly how I feel that I am always grasping to express.

Good to hear. If Laura hasn't sent you the link to more ask her for it, though you may want to wait till Monday by which point she should have access to the broad selection. Good meeting ya, and hope your return flight went well.

That is actually a surprisingly easy place to get to, all road. A 14% grade of a road, but road. Biking down that would be fun, 14% and all switchbacks. I'm getting a better idea of the out of the way places to try in Death Valley with every visit, but alas, it's going to be a few months before I go again.

Wow... the first is akin to an overview of the project, a simple, straightforward example of the concept. The second, however, goes so far beyond as to become a totally fascinating abstract image. The leaf alone, drowning in the shallows, soon to be swept into the deeper ripples of this world... the lightplay through the water, the surface ripples of the water, all make me feel very... hmm. I was going to say 'melancholy', but there's a release, too, a joy in letting go to become part of the beauty, even if it's an ending of sorts.

But I wax writerly. I enjoyed this, Josh, it is quite beautiful. Thank you for sharing, and I look forward to more.
